Breeding Records - Color Genetics

Since Tee J Iceman is a young stud and we wanted to know what to expect him to produce, we had the following test done on him.  I am going to be adding a lot of information to this site about color genetics in the next few months, but for now I want to list what Tee J Iceman's color genetics are so you can try and determine what color foals you may get.

Red Factor - ee

This was easy to determine as he is a Red Dun/Palomino.  Tee J will only sire a Bay/Black/Buckskin, etc. if the mare is black based.  She would have to be "Ee" or "EE".  If she is "EE" then even if bred to Tee J you still wouldn't get a red based foal.  If you bred and "Ee" mare you could get any color.  Tee J would contribute an "e" but the mare could contribute either "e" or "E".   An "ee" foal would be red based, and "Ee" foal would be black based.

Agouti - Aa

This was determined by laboratory testing.  The Agouti is what distributes the black pigments to the points (bays and buckskin) or in the absence of the Agouti then the horse is black or Smokey Black (if it possesses the creme gene).  Since Tee J is a Red Dun/Palomino it is impossible to know without testing or siring many foals, as the Agouti does not effect a red based horse.  Tee J is heterozygous for Agouti not Homozygous.  An "AA" horse would always throw a Bay or Buckskin (if the base coat was black not red, Agouti does not effect Red horses) not Black.  So if you have a red (Palomino or Chestnut/Sorrel) mare you won't know what she has unless you have had her tested or she has produced a lot of foals.

Creme - nCr

Tee J possess a single dilute gene.  He was tested on Nov. 23, 2007.

Dun -

Tee J is also a Red Dun, determined by his strong dorsal stripe, leg barring, and red legs.  His mane and tail are white because he also carries the creme gene (see above).

If you are unsure of what combination of genes your mare may have, feel free to call me and maybe we can determine it from her pedigree and any foals she may have already had.
